Craft Foundry is based on a vision I have: a relaxed place where people can find eco-friendly gifts. Visitors can also sign up for a class in bookbinding, create paste papers and handmade cards; take a class in jewelry. The web site is an extension of this vision.
I was born in Helsinki, Finland and spent a part of my childhood in the Middle East, lending my visual world added color. Since then I have travelled extensively, all the way from India to Mexico, always on the lookout for new and interesting materials. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Arts. This education gave me a solid background for the future creative work. I have been designing books and jewelry for over twenty years, with styles ranging from clean Scandinavian to exotic and tribal, always looking to transcend time and trend.
My love of journals stems in part from having travelled a great deal in my child hood: the journals were portable. I combine different papers and fabrics to evoke a well-worn space where one can write one’s thoughts. Frequently ancient symbols such as the sun become powerful starting points for painting and shaping a book cover. Some of these books were purchased by Oprah's Angel Network.
I use an assortment of materials in the jewelry - whether it is an antique bead from Africa, or beautiful amber from the Dominican Republic, I delight in the unique combinations I can produce. Precious metal clay and BronzClay opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I look for the beauty and delicacy of nature for inspiration. I create earrings and necklaces to wear, for the connection to nature I feel, and to enjoy the timeless yet cyclical qualities that they hold.
I have been teaching workshops at The University of the Arts, at St. Joe's Prep and in the studio for ten years. I exhibited in the Rosen Show Buyers Market of American Craftfor several years in a row, and sold my work nationally. Imparting knowledge through teaching workshops and sharing the joy in new discovery is very meaningful to me.
